English WELLINGTON WINE HARVEST FESTIVAL 2012

BARRELS OF FUN

Whether you’re a passionate foodie, an ardent nature lover, a culture vulture with a taste for a variety of music or a wine connoisseur, the 6th Wellington Wine Harvest Festival has it all. For two jam-packed days over the weekend of 17-18 March, some 20 wine and brandy cellars and other venues invite you to taste, indulge and have loads of fun under the mellow autumn sun.

Festivities and good food undeniably go hand in hand and you’ll not have to go hungry at this festival celebrating the bounty of the Boland: consider a seafood braai at Nabygelegen, oysters and bubbly at Bovlei, or wild boar on the spit at Bontebok Ridge; or be treated to an eat-as-much-as-you-can ice cream challenge at Diemersfontein. From food on the go to sumptuous sit-down affairs; from healthy homemade wares to decadent desserts – your taste buds will be tickled.

First-class music and entertainment is high on the agenda: experience leading SA performer Arno Carstens unplugged at the Bosman Family Vineyard Long Lunch, enjoy the sounds of Idols winner Elvis Blue at the Bordienghuis Theatre, listen to Gerhard Steyn of Baby Tjoklits fame at Kleinevalleij, or tap your feet to the vibes of Die Heuwels Fantasties at Schalk Burger & Sons. Visit Napier Winery for an old-fashioned barn dance experience – you’ll find lots of live music to sip your wine by. As this is a celebration of the fruit of the vine, expect to be wooed by superb wines and spirits at every participating cellar. Try your hand at wine blending at Napier Winery, experience an interesting food & spirits pairing at Jorgensen’s Winery, and taste Diemersfontein’s new white vintages on tap

But if sport and sports is more up your alley, you’re in for a treat: let your picture be taken with the Super Rugby trophy from the South African Franchise Division won by the Stormers last year. Or prove your muscle in the Doolhof Strong Man and Woman competition; mount your quad bike for an adventure starting at Bovlei, or sign up for hours of fun with a barrel-rolling race, grape stomping, boules and an early morning Wineonfoot@Blouvlei viticultural/wine walk. Cheer from the sidelines when the agricultural vehicles of the Farmers’ Parade go by – they will be accompanied by the Super Stars troupe, winners of the Wellington Minstrels.

As little as R80 (under 18’s enter free) puts a wine glass in your hand, an entry armband on your arm and the promise of endless enjoyment within easy reach for every member of the family. A family-friendly shuttle service, Okkasi-oppi-bus starting at Bovlei will transport you between the various venues. Afrikaans WELLINGTON WYN OESFEES

VAATJIES VOL PLESIER -
